as parents, we are called to sacrifice
If you're not sacrificing, you're not a parent
John 3:16-18 one and only son
Jesus' life was all about sacrifice
Where would we be if Jesus was not sacrificial?
Father's Day Message
Bill Scurry - Delighting in Your Children
Luke 1:11-17 announcement of the birth of John the Baptist
Frankie Beverly -- old school -- Joy & Pain, Sunshine & Rain
there are contradictions in life, paradoxes
children are not always a delight
no one can give us those extremes like your children and your spouse
Bill was not at the birth of two of his children, one said that he/she hated him a few years ago
The good times require creativity -- the planning and sacrifice -- working your plan
He scheduled time to be with his children individually each week
He is delighting in his children
Danielle is working with him now
Bad Times -- disobedience
Acts 2:17
dreams are the secret of delighting in your children during the hard times
He has dreams for all of his children. Sitting around the dinner table with a family of baptized disciples. Walking his daughters down the aisle. Dreams of them driving safely. Dreams allow him to delight in his children during the bad times.
Bill Nork -- Training & Teaching Your Children
Dt 4:9-10 do not forget . . .
You have to remember where you came from and think of where people will be if they are not trained
We cannot forget when our relationship began with God
1) Jesus knew his audience
Parents must teach and train differently based on each child
Jesus used parables -- he used them to lead to understanding
Mt 5:10 Blessed = divine joy, true happiness
Blessed = inner satisfaction; not being dependent on outward circumstances
vs. 3 poor in spirit; humble; understanding who you are
Understand your strengths and weaknesses - glorify God with all of them
We tend to do what we're good at and avoid what we're not good at
Then we end up in cliques with people that are like us
Bill was in a folk band for his energy, not his voice (his microphone was turned off)
Someone trained properly can go anywhere or do anything because they know themselves, they don't pretend
2) Know your children
They will be more confident, help them to know who they are
3) know your sin -- Jesus lived his life to please His father, not to be a brown nose
imagine your children or your grandparents being bullied
That was Jesus' heart toward sin
He despised sin; think of sin as the opposite of making your friend happy
Sin is very alluring, very powerful
It takes a powerful love to counteract them
vs. 5 meek is not weak - it is controlled power
We need to teach our children to control their power
They can still serve God through their weaknesses
Bill's not late for Panther's games, Bobcat's games, is he late for church? quiet times?
We love God, our children need to see that
Bill's favorite teams are the New York Giants, the LA Dodgers -- he never lived there, those were his Dad's favorite teams
Do your children see you praising God?
There comes a time when your children think you are not all that
He had great examples around his sons - Corrie, Ian -- they reinforce his training and give the kids great examples
Have your friends hang out with disciples, they will want to be around them more
What kind of example are you?
We're taught to teach and train everywhere we go
Bring joy to your life - let you children and friends see you enjoying life
Chip Tanner -- Leading by Example
God works through each of us
1 Cor 11:1 Give praise go God when good happens
Prov 22:6 train a child . . . other translations say "start a child"
As long as you're on this side of the the grass, you have a chance, there's hope
Gal 5:22-25 fruit of the spirit
how are you doing with that?
Applies to mothers, too, a lot of times fathers aren't around - physically or mentally
ESPN or FAMILY?
Do an inventory - how much time do you spend watching TV vs. time with the family?
Need to have quantity time in order to have quality time
When they have dinner, they don't answer the phone
That time is important, if the call is important, they'll call back
John 13:15-17 set you an example. . .
you will be blessed if you do them
We're blessed if we do things for people
Do they see us being loving?
regardless of color, regardless of religious affiliation, economic status, having been hurt by that person
If someone asks our children, what do they see in us ?
Our kids are mirrors - they see what we do
How do our kids treat their parents? their grandparents?
We need to be humble when our kids point out things to us
God calls us to love unconditionally
Do they see us enjoying life? Do they see us laugh?
God gave us a sense of humor. He saw the movie "The Bucket List" Morgan Freeman -- he put on his list that he wanted to laugh so hard that he cried - if he put it on his list, it meant he hadn't done it
Do they see us being happy? Content? If not, why?
We ask our kids to do everything without complaining, do we do it?
Jesus attracted people with his character, joy, peace
Are we attracting or repelling?
Would someone describe us as a mosquito bite?
When is the last time we served? That our children served with us?
Mari includes the kids when she serves
If we don't include the kids -- their friends will
Do they see us giving?
Do you make the children give things away?
Need to learn that at an early age
Do they see us using our worldly wealth for others?
Luke 16:10-12
How are we doing with what we have?
Chip's been to India, we have it made
In India, they can eat for a week on $2.00
Do they see us being faithful?
At bedtimes, at mealtimes -- show gratitude
When was the last time you missed a meeting of the body?
Tanner was diagnosed two weeks ago with Type 1 diabetes -- he is 11 years old
he's all boy - he runs, he conquers
he has to count the carbs for everything he puts in his body
He gets out of the hospital on Wednesday - he went to midweek Wednesday night, his choice
It's never to late to set an example
Are you a good example or a bad one?
It's never too late, there is hope
Phil 4:12-13 the secret of being content, I can do everything through Him who gives me strength
If you keep trying it yourself and it isn't working, change the formula
The definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result
I am the way, you are the branches
apart from me, you can do nothing
3 John 1:4
I have no greater joy than to hear my children walking in the truth
